Drugs: Why They’re Such a Problem

It may seem silly to some people that drugs are such a problem. Some people see them every day and think nothing of it while others are never exposed to drugs. That may just be the reason why drugs are such a problem in today’s society. They are a problem because so many people are exposed to and use drugs on a regular basis.

It isn’t just the illegal drugs that are the problem. Drugs such as alcohol and tobacco are a problem in today’s society as well. You may not see what the problem is because you know people that haven’t had any severe side effects due to drugs, and as that is one of the main problems, there are many others.

Different drugs have different side effects. Most drugs alter your thinking ability as well as your reaction time. This is dangerous, not only to yourself, but to everyone else. Take alcohol for example. Because of alcohol’s side effects, someone dies every 30 minutes due to drunk driving accidents. That’s 16,000 people per year. That’s not even counting the ones injured due to drunk driving accidents, which is approximately 275,000 people. To think, that’s only from one drug.

Drugs not only alter your brain function, but pose many health risks. Using a drug once may not cause severe damage, but rarely do you ever see a case where a drug was used only once. The use of a drug over and over again can cause damage to almost any organ depending on the drug being used. This costs millions of dollars per year for these people to get surgery and help.

Drugs aren’t only a threat to the person using them, but cause emotional damage to that person as well as the people they are close to. When you use drugs, you become a completely different person and that affects everyone around you.
